I fully meant to post before we even went into surgery, but weeks when Art is home are so busy I never got to it. And here we are, five days post surgery. For those who don't know, Silas has scoliosis and missing ribs on one side. He had a titanium "rib" and a rod placed in his back about two years ago. He has surgery approximately every six months to expand the hardware for growth. But it can only be expanded about three times before it has to be replaced entirely and this surgery was time to replace it. Although not as invasive as the original surgery to place all the hardware in, it is still pretty hard. He also had some problems post op, which were made even worse by a very UNcompassionate and cranky night nurse. But he is home now and recuperating well. Here he is resting on the couch with Maggie playing with him.
The picture below is actually the x-ray of when he first had his hardware put in a couple of years ago. I do not have a current x-ray, but this gives you an idea of the type of
metal that is in our sweet boy.
And below is a picture of his back yesterday. In his expansion surgeries, the incision is only about six inches long, but you can see how this was a more extensive procedure.
It is very difficult watching someone you love go through such suffering, and then have to do it over and over again. But for now, this is the best the medical field has to offer. We are thankful that it can be fixed at all, but it is not something you ever get used to.
And here we have a couple of pictures of Maggie modeling dresses she got for her birthday, one from Grandma and Grandpa, and the other from Granny. They are both beautiful!
And a shot of my Lemonade:
